EPISODE 2: LATE-NIGHT CHATS

That night, I tossed and turned on my bed, staring at the ceiling. My roommates were fast asleep, but sleep refused to come to me.

It wasn’t the heat, and it wasn’t stress. It was David.

Why was I thinking about him like this? It wasn’t like he was the first fine boy I had seen. Maybe it was the way he smiled when he spoke, or how he noticed me when nobody else did. In church, I was just another quiet girl in a long skirt. Nobody ever looked at me twice. But David… he noticed.

I sighed and picked up my phone. A tiny red notification glowed on Instagram. Message from David.

David: Pastor’s daughter, hope you’re praying before you sleep? 😂

I smiled.

Me: Lol, I’m not a pastor’s daughter oh.
David: 😂 But you look like one. Always serious.
Me: I just focus on my studies.
David: That’s good. But life is more than books. Hope you’re enjoying campus small small?

I hesitated before replying. The truth was, I wasn’t. My life was a straight line—hostel to class, class to fellowship, fellowship to hostel. No parties. No hangouts. Just the same routine. But I couldn’t admit that.

Me: Lol, I’m trying.
David: Nice one. We should hang out one day, talk about life. Don’t worry, I won’t bite 😉.

I stared at the message. A small voice in my head whispered, Adaeze, don’t start what you can’t finish.

I was about to drop my phone when another message popped up.

David: You don’t seem like the type that likes to have fun. Am I wrong?

Something inside me felt challenged. Was I really that boring?

Me: Lol, I like fun oh. Who told you I don’t?
David: Really? Prove it then.

I paused. Prove it?

Me: How?
David: Let’s hang out tomorrow evening. Just for small gist, nothing serious.

I took a deep breath. My fingers hovered over the keyboard. If I said yes, what would that mean?

A stronger voice in my head said, Ada, don’t enter fire. But my fingers had a mind of their own.

Me: Lol, we’ll see.

I dropped my phone, my heart pounding. What was I doing?

David was different. He was bold. Playful. Dangerous.

I just didn’t know how dangerous he would become.
