EPISODE 21: CHECKMATE

I took a deep breath. If I let fear control me, Vanessa would win. And I wasn’t about to let that happen.

I forced a smile. “You think you’re smart, Vanessa.”

Her smirk didn’t waver. “I know I am.”

I nodded. “You see, I was actually scared at first. But now? I see through you.”

She raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. “Oh? Do tell.”

I took a step closer, lowering my voice. “You won’t send that message.”

David blinked. “Ada, what are you—”

Vanessa chuckled. “And why won’t I?”

“Because if you do,” I whispered, “I’ll make sure you go down with me.”

Her smile faltered.

Bingo.

“You see, Vanessa,” I continued, crossing my arms, “you’re so desperate to make me look bad, but you forgot one thing—you’re not innocent either.”

Her fingers tightened around her phone. “What nonsense are you talking about?”

I took out my own phone. “That chat you showed me? It’s fake. And you know what’s funny about fake messages?”

She didn’t answer.

“They can be traced.”

Vanessa’s face twitched.

Gotcha.

I turned to David. “You have a friend that’s into tech, right? That guy… Daniel?”

David nodded slowly. “Yeah… he’s a hacker.”

I smiled. “Good. Because I’m sure he can check if those messages were doctored.”

Vanessa’s grip on her phone loosened. “You wouldn’t dare.”

I shrugged. “Oh, I would. And when I prove that you faked everything? The church will know exactly what kind of person you are.”

David looked at Vanessa. “Wait. Is it true? Did you fake those messages?”

She scoffed. “Oh, please. Are you really going to believe her over me?”

I stepped forward. “And if I’m lying, then send the message. Go on.”

Silence.

Vanessa’s eyes darted from me to David, then back to her phone.

For the first time, she looked… uncertain.

David sighed. “Vanessa, tell me the truth.”

She took a step back. “You know what? I don’t have time for this nonsense.”

I smiled. “That’s what I thought.”

She gave me a long, hard look. Then she turned to David. “You’re really choosing her over me?”

David ran a hand through his hair. “Vanessa, it’s not like that—”

She laughed bitterly. “Save it.”

Then, she did something unexpected.

She deleted the message.

I let out a slow breath.

She had lost.

Vanessa glared at me. “You think you’ve won, church girl?”

I kept my face blank. “I think I’ve survived.”

She shook her head. “This isn’t over.”

And with that, she stormed out, slamming the door behind her.

Silence filled the room.

David exhaled. “That was intense.”

I turned to him. “David… tell me the truth. Were you really with her?”

His face darkened. “Ada—”

“David.”

He rubbed his face. “It’s complicated.”

I swallowed. “That means yes.”

He looked away. “I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

I nodded slowly. “But you did.”

I picked up my bag.

“Ada, please don’t go.”

I paused at the door. “I should’ve left a long time ago.”

Then I walked out.

And for the first time in weeks, I felt free.
