EPISODE 6: A STRANGER IN THE ROOM
BANG! BANG!! BANG!!!
“David, open this door now!”
My heart was racing. I wasn’t ready for this kind of drama. I grabbed my bag, ready to run, but David remained calm.
“Relax, Ada,” he sighed. “She just likes making noise.”
“Who is she?” I whispered, my hands shaking.
“Her name is Vanessa,” he muttered. “My ex. She’s… complicated.”
Complicated. That word alone sent warning signals to my brain.
BANG!
“David, I know you’re inside! I just want to talk!”
I didn’t know whether to trust him or not. I didn’t even understand why I was so scared.
“What if she sees me here?” I whispered.
“She won’t do anything,” David assured me.
I swallowed hard. “Are you sure?”
“One hundred percent,” he said, getting up to open the door.
The moment he unlocked it, she walked in like she owned the place.
Vanessa was beautiful. Not just normal fine—she had that dangerous kind of beauty. Tall, light-skinned, perfect makeup, designer bag hanging from her arm.
Her perfume filled the room instantly—a strong, expensive scent.
The first thing she did? She ignored me.
She walked straight to David and placed her hand on his chest. Comfortably.
“Baby, why are you ignoring me?” she pouted.
David gently pushed her hand away. “Vanessa, what do you want?”
She finally turned to me, her eyes scanning me from head to toe.
I suddenly felt small. My plain top and long skirt felt too simple.
“Oh,” she smiled sweetly. “I didn’t know you had a visitor.”
I didn’t reply.
She moved closer and stretched out her hand. “Hi, I’m Vanessa. And you are…?”
I hesitated before shaking her hand. “Adaeze.”
“Adaeze,” she repeated, still smiling. “Such a lovely name. You must be his cousin?”
David coughed.
I frowned. “No, I’m—”
“Ohhh, I get it!” she gasped. “You’re one of his church friends!”
The way she said “church friends” made my skin crawl. Like she was mocking me.
I glanced at David, waiting for him to say something. He just stood there, silent.
Vanessa sighed dramatically. “David, we really need to talk.”
“There’s nothing to talk about,” he said coldly.
She laughed. A soft, knowing laugh.
“Baby, don’t be like this.”
Baby?!
I folded my arms. Why was she calling him baby if they had broken up?
David rubbed his forehead. “Vanessa, Ada and I were talking. Whatever you want to say, make it fast.”
She placed her hand on her chest. “Ah-ah, David. So I’m not important again? After everything we’ve been through?”
I shifted uncomfortably. I didn’t like this girl.
Vanessa turned to me with her sweet smile. “Sister Ada, I hope you don’t mind me stealing him for just five minutes?”
I forced a smile. “No problem.”
“Thank you, dear,” she said softly. “You’re such a good girl.”
Good girl.
Why did that sound like an insult?
As they stepped outside, I exhaled deeply. The room suddenly felt too small.
Something about Vanessa didn’t sit well with me.
And I had no idea that this was just the beginning of my problems.
