I Rejected the Richest Guy in Church—Here’s Why I Don’t Regret It – Episode 16

EPISODE 16: The Unknown Caller

I didn’t sleep that night.

The message replayed in my mind on loop—“Be careful. He’s not who he says he is. Don’t let him know I told you.”

Who was this person? How did they know Charles? And why were they warning me… now?

I tried to pray, but my thoughts were all over the place. Fear was a heavy blanket on my chest.

The next morning, I got to church early. Earlier than usual. I wasn’t even sure why—I just felt like I needed to be there. To see something. Or maybe… someone.

I sat at the back, observing.

Then Charles walked in.

Dressed in his usual clean-cut, too-perfect-to-be-real outfit. People greeted him with respect. One of the youth leaders even bowed slightly when shaking his hand. A few girls giggled and whispered behind him. He soaked it in like a sponge, flashing that smile that always made people forget to think.

I watched him closely. Every move was calculated. Polished. Practiced.

Then… it happened.

As the service began and worship filled the hall, I caught him looking around. Scanning.

For me.

When our eyes locked, his face broke into a soft smile. The same smile that had once confused me—gentle but empty. I didn’t smile back.

After service, I tried to slip out unnoticed, but I wasn’t fast enough.

“Chinaza,” his voice called behind me. I froze.

He walked up, oozing charm as always. “It’s been a while. You look great.”

I forced a polite nod. “Thank you.”

“I was hoping we could talk. Maybe after midweek service? I… I know we ended things weird, and I just want to make sure you’re okay.”

He looked sincere. But now… all I saw were cracks. Subtle, dangerous cracks.

“I’m fine, Charles,” I said simply.

“I miss our conversations,” he continued, ignoring the cold tone in my voice. “I still believe we’re meant to do great things together.”

My stomach churned.

“I need to go,” I said quickly and turned away.

But just before I walked off, he leaned in slightly and whispered, “You know, people make mistakes. But real love doesn’t walk away.”

I didn’t turn back.

As I walked out of church, a strange sensation crept up my spine—like someone was watching me. Not just watching, but studying me.

I got into my bolt ride home and locked the door behind me, heart racing.

My phone buzzed again.

Same number.

“He knows I met you. Be careful. He’s getting desperate.”

That’s when it hit me.

This wasn’t over.

Something dark was coming. And I had just stepped into the center of it.

To be continued…
