I Rejected the Richest Guy in Church—Here’s Why I Don’t Regret It: Episode 2

EPISODE 2: The Silence That Shocked the Church

The church hall was completely silent.

Hundreds of eyes were on me. Some were filled with excitement, others with envy, and a few with confusion. Even the choir members had stopped whispering among themselves. Everyone was waiting for me to say something—anything.

But I couldn’t.

My throat felt dry, and my heart pounded against my chest. The microphone in Charles’ hand was still stretched towards me, his face full of expectation. He was smiling, confident, almost certain that I would say yes.

After all, who would reject Charles Okafor?

The young billionaire.
The generous giver in church.
The dream of almost every single sister.

I took a deep breath and slowly shook my head.

Gasps.

Someone in the back even screamed, “JESUS!”

I turned to Pastor Daniel, then back to Charles. I could see his smile starting to fade. His hand, still holding the microphone, was slightly trembling now.

“I’m sorry, Charles,” I said softly, but my voice carried through the microphone he was still holding.

A wave of confusion washed over the congregation.

Sorry?

Did she just say sorry instead of yes?

Charles frowned. “Chinaza, do you mean…?”

I took another deep breath and did what no one in that church expected.

I stood up. I straightened my dress, looked Charles in the eye, and repeated it more clearly.

“No, Charles. I won’t marry you.”

Silence.

Complete, heavy silence.

I turned and started walking down the aisle, feeling the weight of hundreds of stares drilling into my back. My legs were shaking, but I refused to stop. Amaka tried to grab my hand, whispering, “Naza, what are you doing?” but I gently pulled away.

I needed to leave.

I needed fresh air.

I had just done something that would shake the entire church, and I knew by the time I stepped outside, my name would be on every tongue.

But I didn’t regret it.

Not one bit.

And very soon, everyone would understand why.
