I Rejected the Richest Guy in Church—Here’s Why I Don’t Regret It: Episode 4

EPISODE 4: The Mask Begins to Slip

Charles stood there, his face unreadable, but his eyes—those sharp, calculating eyes—were locked on me.

Amaka instantly straightened, her nervous energy betraying her. She glanced at me, then back at him, forcing an awkward laugh.

“Ah, Brother Charles! You’re here?” She chuckled. “I was just—erm—I was just talking to Naza. You know, asking why she—uh—why she did what she did.”

Charles ignored her. His gaze didn’t leave my face.

“Chinaza,” he said, his voice eerily calm. “Can I speak with you? Alone.”

A cold feeling crawled up my spine.

I didn’t want to be alone with him.

I knew that something was off about this man. Something that no one else seemed to see.

But before I could say anything, Amaka quickly nodded.

“Of course! No problem at all!” She grabbed her bag and started backing away. “I’ll just—uh—go and check something inside the church. Take your time, okay?”

I shot her a glare. She was abandoning me.

She mouthed “Sorry” before disappearing.

Now, it was just Charles and me.

A thick, uncomfortable silence settled between us.

He took a step closer. I held my ground.

“Why, Chinaza?” he asked quietly. “Why did you humiliate me in front of the whole church?”

I met his gaze. “I didn’t mean to humiliate you. But I couldn’t say yes.”

“Because God told you not to?” His lips curled into something that wasn’t quite a smile. “Is that your final answer?”

I said nothing.

He exhaled sharply and ran a hand through his hair. Then, suddenly, he chuckled. A low, humorless laugh.

“You’re a very foolish girl, Chinaza.”

My heart skipped a beat.

Did I hear him correctly?

I took a small step back, my eyes narrowing. “Excuse me?”

His smile was gone now. His entire expression had changed.

“Do you know what you just did?” His voice was low, but there was an edge to it. “Do you know the kind of men who have been begging for the opportunity you just threw away? Do you know what it means to have my last name? To be my wife?”

I swallowed hard, but I didn’t respond.

He took another step closer. This time, I stepped back.

“I chose you, Chinaza,” he continued, his tone tightening. “I could have had any girl in that church. But I chose you. And you embarrassed me.”

I clenched my fists. “I didn’t ask you to choose me.”

For the first time, I saw something flash in his eyes.

Anger.

Raw, barely controlled anger.

It was just for a second, but I saw it.

Then, just as quickly as it came, it disappeared. He smirked instead.

“Alright,” he said simply. “You’ll regret this.”

I stiffened. “Is that a threat?”

His smirk widened. “No. It’s a fact.”

I felt a chill go through me.

Charles stepped back, adjusted his suit, and gave me one last look.

“Enjoy your ‘God’s will,’ Chinaza,” he said mockingly. “We’ll see how that works out for you.”

Then, he turned and walked away.

I let out a shaky breath, my mind racing.

I knew it.

I knew something was wrong with him.

And I had just made an enemy of one of the most powerful men in church.

To be continued…
