The Prodigal Daughter – Episode 14

Episode 14 – Nowhere is Safe

Sandra clutched her seatbelt as Tolu drove through the empty streets, his grip firm on the steering wheel. The streetlights flickered past, but her mind was racing too fast to focus on anything. She had escaped, but for how long?

She turned to Tolu, her voice shaky. “Tolu, you don’t understand. That man… Mr. Leke… he won’t just let me go. He’s dangerous.”

Tolu kept his eyes on the road, his jaw tight. “Then we’ll go somewhere he can’t find you. Your mum has been praying for this moment, Sandra. You’re going home.”

Sandra swallowed hard. “Home?” The thought both comforted and terrified her. How would she face her mother after everything? The shame, the regret, the mess she had made of her life. “Tolu, I don’t know if I can—”

A loud screech interrupted her.

A black SUV suddenly swerved in front of them, blocking the road.

Tolu cursed under his breath, slamming the brakes. The tires screeched, and the car came to a jolting stop just inches away from the SUV. Sandra’s blood turned to ice.

Two men stepped out of the vehicle. Mr. Leke’s men.

“Tolu…” Sandra whispered, fear gripping her throat.

Tolu’s fingers flexed on the steering wheel. “Hold on.” Without another word, he threw the gear into reverse, the car jerking backward at full speed.

But just as he did, another car appeared behind them, its headlights flashing aggressively. Trapped.

Sandra’s breath came in gasps. “They found me…” she whispered, her hands trembling.

Tolu’s gaze darted around. He was looking for an opening, an escape. But there was none. The men were already walking toward them. One of them pulled something out of his pocket. A gun.

Sandra’s heart nearly stopped.

Tolu cursed again. “Listen to me, Sandra. If anything happens, you run. Do you hear me?”

Sandra shook her head, tears filling her eyes. “No, Tolu, I can’t—”

BANG!

The gunshot shattered the night.

And everything happened at once.

Episode 15 – The Choice

The sharp, deafening sound of the gunshot echoed in Sandra’s ears as she froze in place. Her whole body went numb, and she felt as though the world had stopped spinning for a moment.

Tolu’s hands jerked on the wheel as he swerved the car. The sound of tires screeching against the tarmac filled the air as he desperately tried to reverse again, but the black SUV had already blocked the way, and the car behind them was closing in fast.

Sandra’s heart thudded painfully in her chest. They were trapped. Completely.

The man with the gun took a slow step toward them, his face cold and expressionless. He raised the weapon, aiming it directly at the windshield. Sandra’s breath caught in her throat. Every instinct in her body screamed at her to get out of the car, to run, to hide—but there was nowhere to go.

Tolu gripped the steering wheel tighter, his jaw clenched. “Sandra,” he said, his voice steady but full of urgency. “I need you to listen carefully. When I give you the signal, you run. You run, and don’t look back. Understand?”

Sandra’s eyes were wide with fear. “Tolu, what are you talking about? No! I won’t leave you!”

“You have to!” Tolu’s voice was sharp now, with an edge of desperation. “I’ll try to hold them off. You need to get out of here. You’re not safe with me.” He turned to face her for the briefest moment, his eyes filled with determination. “Go. Now!”

Sandra’s body shook with the weight of his words. She didn’t want to run. She didn’t want to leave him behind. But deep down, she knew he was right. If she stayed, she’d only be putting them both in more danger.

The man with the gun stepped closer, and Sandra’s body reacted on its own. She reached for the door handle, her fingers shaking as she pulled it open.

Tolu’s voice was barely above a whisper. “Go.”

Before she could think any further, Sandra threw herself out of the car and into the night. She ran, her feet pounding against the ground, the sound of pursuit hot on her heels.

Behind her, she heard the screech of tires as Tolu made a sharp turn, but she didn’t stop. She couldn’t. She didn’t dare look back.

She didn’t know how far she ran, but her lungs burned, and her legs felt like they were made of lead. She stumbled once, but pushed herself back up. She couldn’t stop. Not now. Not after everything.

But just as she rounded a corner, she collided with someone. Someone strong, solid, who caught her before she could fall.

She looked up in shock.

It was Mr. Leke.
