Here are some practical tips to help you stop sleeping during sermon:
1. Get Enough Rest Before Church Service
You must make sure you get enough sleep in the the night before attending church service the following day. When you rest well it will make it easier for you to stay awake and be attentive during the sermon.
2. Always Sit in Front:
Always position yourself to the front row when you’re in church, closer to the pulpit where you can see and hear the Pastor clearly. Sitting up in front can help you feel more engaged and less inclined to sleep off.
3. Stay Hydrated With Water
Bring a bottle of water with you to stay hydrated, and have a light snack before the service if you tend to get drowsy when hungry. Avoid heavy meals that might make you sleep and don’t sit near that big fan or AC.
2. Take Notes During Sermon
Bring a notebook or use your phone to jot down key points from the sermon (But notebook is best). Actively engaging with the message by taking notes can help keep your mind focused and alert from sleeping.
3. Participate in Worship:
Singing along with the worship songs and actively participating in prayers can help keep your mind and body engaged, making it less likely for you to fall asleep during sermon.
4. Shift Positions
If you feel yourself starting to nod off, kindly and gently ask the usher to shift your position or your seat or stand up for a moment to wake yourself up. But don’t distract the people while standing up. (You should rarely do this one when it’s a Sunday service).
5. Focus on the Sermon
Remind yourself of the importance of the sermon and the opportunity to grow spiritually and the reason you’re in church. Stay mentally engaged by actively listening to your Pastor and reflecting on the sermon being shared. This will distract you from unnecessary sleeping.
